Welcome to this learning module on the history of computer graphics!

This week, we will be exploring the fascinating evolution of computer screens and 2D graphics. To kick things off, we will be watching "Screens & 2D Graphics: Crash Course Computer Science #23."

This video will take you on a journey from the earliest text-based computer displays to the pixel-based graphics that are the foundation of the digital world we know today. You will learn about:

  • Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs): The technology that powered early computer screens.
  • Vector and Raster Graphics: Two different approaches to drawing images on a screen.
  • The challenges of early computer memory and how engineers found clever ways to create graphics with limited resources.
  • Pioneering innovations like "Space War," one of the first video games, and "Sketchpad," an early computer-aided design program.
  • The birth of bitmap displays, which paved the way for modern graphical user interfaces (GUIs).

By the end of this video, you will have a better understanding of the fundamental concepts that make modern computing possible. Please watch the video and be prepared to discuss it in our next session.
